Thanks to Murali Venkataraman for introducing me a beautiful collection of bangla songs of Haimonti shukla. And today is an occasion for posting this song. Its Murali’s birthday, Happy Birthday Murali:)

I was mesmerized very much by a song, went ahead to make a karaoke track for it. I had no idea of the lyrics then. Murali knows all those songs by heart , so he helped me initially. Later came the saviour, Soumitra ji who was so helpful with the diction, patiently heard my versions over n over n corrected the mistakes. Thanks a ton Ji! Still, please forgive my diction issues my dear bengali friends n correct me as much as possible. I have tried the song with less punch ins n less mistakes hopefully.

Kumaran gave me a helping hand in mixing the song, though sum issues were there w.r.t synching, he has tried his best! Thanks a lot!

Its a long time since I listened to any live carnatic concerts. The last I atteneded probably was sudha ragunathan's and kanyakumari's concerts during Jan 05. Last sunday, Chandi homam conducted by S'pore dakshina brahmin sabha was held in a profound manner. Befor deeparadhanai, I got to listen to a beautiful krithi rendered by Mr. Sandeep Narayan who is a disciple of the well acclaimed South Indian vocalist Sri Sanjay Subrahmanyan since 1996. It was 'Nee dhan Thunai Neelambari'. It was tuned in ashta ragamalika and sandeep's excellent rendition revealed many ragas like neelambari, vasantha bhairavi, gowri manohari, mohana kalyani and so on. How much I wished it never ended. It is said to be composed by the Great thanjavur Kalyanaraman(SKR) who was well known as innovative student of GNB who imbibed his guru’s musical knowledge and yet was able to present it with a stamp of originality.

Next day, I happened to glance thro the concerts in the nearby vadapathira kaliamman temple and found Mr.Sandeep's concert was there. So made it a point not to miss it. Though it was just 45 min, it was a very enjoyable experience. I entered half way thru sum krithi in Sri ragam followed by akilandeshwari in sahana. Later amma ravamma, the kalyani alapana n neraval I should say was breath taking, didnt realize the transition to swaras, just got the audience immersed. And ended with Thunbam nergayil which unconsciously brought tears to my eyes, later controlled it after feeling slightly embarassed. When I was wondering whether I cud request for 'Nee dhan thunai', it was a super surprise he ended the concert with that song. SO that made my day. I really hope to catch up such wonderful concerts in the days to come.

I had envied my college mate Anitha sing this song beautifully, its range n melody n harmonies were pretty challenging to me. There are various kinds of advertisments - humorous, graphical, emotional, musical, colourful ads.. Most of the saree and jewellery ads have peppy numbers with a whole lot of men, women, children dancing in various colours..some are popular for their brand ambassadors... ads with cute children and pets attract everyone's attention.. Some Ads which i love to watch for its music..
1. IR song, 'santhathil'(auto raja) in saravana jewellery starring actress sneha,. this song is originally from malayalam 'thumbe vaa' sung by janaki for IR.. the ad was done in violin and flute.. it was so great..sneha was not that beautiful as its music..
2. Recent ad for saravana jewelery starring shreya is ' kaatrinile varum valaiyosai..' in shanmugapriya raagam sung by nityashree..
3. Another IR song where I heard some mind blowing fusion for saravana jewelery staring shreya is 'Edho mogam'.. it was so good.. its a must listen n see ad.. shreya s also ..hm.. not bad..
4. Actress padmapriya starrer ad..for sum jewelery again.. its a fusion of a old song, ' aasai adharku mele'.. very nicely choreographed.. she looks really beautiful here..
5. Wow.. ARR Airtel song.. everyday sum mobile or the other rings this in different instruments,,..
6. "You and I.... in this beautiful world.. " and the new vodafone song , pug and the lil gal scenes r so sweeeeeeeeeet.. am hunting for the song to set my ringtone..
7. Khazana jewellery ad song is another grt one..begins wit' Pa ma ga, sa ri ni sa'.. and proceeds melodiously...
8. A cute lil gal practises bharatnayam , making of chapathi by actress sneha and the little gal's dance steps synchronizes so well with the swaras sung by the singer.. this is the ad for Aashirwad aata..
9. I like those kuthu/folk based songs for soft drinks like fanta - 'adhe colour, pudhu figure' starred trisha n one smart guy.. coke - 'coke adida rap adida kanavula kalaaikalam' starred vijay n katrina kaif..

Idea Star Singer - A great show indeed!

'Idea Star Singer', a reality music show(music competition) as they call it, being telecast in Asianet from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on week days is a treat to all music lovers. The Scale and grandeur of the program is much bigger than 'Airtel Super Singer' which was telecast in Vijay TV. I came to know about this program recently when one of my friend asked me to watch it. Since my mother in law is from Palghat, in laws also watch the program. My god. All the singers sound like professionals.The foremost thing which got me stuck to the program is that they sing a lot of tamil/hindi songs and not only malayalam. Since then i became a fan of this program. It seems this had been there since last year(I really missed something great). The versatility of the rounds in this competition is simply fabulous.
The judges include playback singer M. G. Shrikumar, music director Sharath, and our pop queen Usha Uthup. Usha Uthup is sweetly called as 'DhiDhi' in the program. And others, shriyetta n sharath yetta.. While Usha Uthup concentrates on the finer details like confidence, breath control, attitude and presentation, Shri and Sharath are excellent singers, they get too technical, concentrate every swaram of the song sung by the contestants, point out their mistakes, make them repeat and correct them. Its a superb learning ground for those highly talented singers. For the finals of the program, there were five rounds which were unique n was never in the history of any music competition.
1. Carnatic kutchery round
2. Thillana round
3. Non-Malayalam round
4.Dakshinamoorthy swamy round(He is a very very great music director in malayalam like IR, IR and gangai amaran were said to be playing guitar for him in their initial days in cinema.DS songs were pearls...)
5.Judge's choice(this judge is one celebrity judge(definitely some musician) who keeps changing..people like MSV,gangaiamaran were there..
How can i not mention about the bold and beautiful hostess ' Ranjani'.. She has a terrific voice with lovely emotions..(she is missing this week,some other gal is interviewing the singers..ore mokkai..this female speaks mallu too fast..i dont understand only:(..)

Just Imagine how talented the singers should be to go through all these rounds.. all the rounds were awesome. many are in you tube..
6 (Najim,Hesham,Tushar,Durga,Amrutha,Arun gopan) were selected for the Finals out of which 2(Amrutha,hesham) were eliminated and 4 are getting ready for the mega finals.
Whats in store for the winner???? any guesses???

First prize:40 lakh worth flat in cochin
Second prize:Hyundai Santro
Third prize:Alto
Fourth prize: 1 lac rupees
Two of them who got eliminated was awarded 75,000rs..

More than these awards, they stole millions of hearts by their mesmerizing voices one of those being mine. Thats the greatest award!

Since my childhood, the only hindi song i knew till my seventh standard was 'Ek dho teen'. Then ' Hum aapke hain kaun'.. I convinced everybody at my home to watch the movie..around 15 of them went.. none of us understood hindi that time..it was so funny..many places the title wud come in the dialogue and w wud ask each other ' atleast title ku artham enna'.. that was the second hindi movie i watched.. first was 'tezaab' wit my parents when i was in 3rd.. tat too some relative took us.. later i started watching lot of hindi movies n when we moved to bombay, there was no choice...pop albums were more fascinating than the movie songs..
Coming back to my favorite movie songs..
let me limit the count to 10 for now as thr r lots..
1.Ek dho teen(Tezaab).. simply loved it for madhuri's dance n the music
2. Pahla pahla pyaar hai(HAHK) - soothening romantic melody
3. Pahla nasha(KSKT) - After i saw the remix i downloded the original n watched.. great song..
4. Churaliya hai tumne() - I came across this song in music competitions.. then later in tv.. then became my altime favorite..hv sung tis in many places..
5. Yaayre Yaayre(Rangeela) - crazy abt tis song for rahman's music,urmila's dance, asha bhosle's voice n tat small kidoos part..
6. Raja ko rani se(Akele hum akele tum) - Aamir-Manisha pair was so beautiful.. i love tat cycle scene in the song..
7.Hum ko manki(guddi) - I watched this jaya bachan movie in DD, she was so cute.. n liked tis prayer song in 'Ameerkalyani' vry much..
8. Aye ho mere zindagi(Raja Hindustani) - tis song has got lovely lyrics.. again i heard first in my school music competition n later in movie..
9. o..mere ladki & Pyaar hua(1947,a love story) - o..mere ladki song was so popular tat time..anil kapoor was quiet smart.. and manisha's solo soong 'Pyaar hua chupkese' s a cute melody..
10.last but not the least , 'Mere sapnon ki Rani ' and 'Chandha hai tu' from Aradhana

I feel very disappointed about my ignorance in old hindi songs even though some very popular songs i download n listen to like kabhi kabhi, baharaon phool barsao,jeena yahaan..
From remixes i discovered some great songs n listen like dil kya kare, jhumka gira, o mere sona re, raat shabdnami, Piya tu, khata laga..
I still have a thirst to explore old hindi songs.. if anyone has some grt collections..gimme sum links..

He has gained this popularity and recognition majorly through his fast peppy numbers much westernized with different instruments, rare voices etc
When it comes to classical based numbers there r not as many as other types and i thought of picking such classical melodies..
1. En veetu thottathil(Gentle Man)- This song sounds very familiar to Arunagirinadhar's 'Nada vinthu kalaadi namo'.. a very nice duet though..the humming in the beginning speaks the raaga of the song, 'Senjurutti'.
2. Kannodu kaanbadhellam(Jeans) - Lovely song in the raaga 'Abheri' excellently rendered by Nityashree.. another 'Abheri'song tat comes to my mind is 'Singara velane deva'(super challenging number) by S.Janaki..
3. Narumugaiye(Iruvar) - Bombay Jayashree simply rocks singing this number.. its in the raaga 'Naatai'.
4.Enna sonnalum ketka villai(Kadhal virus) - Sweet sangathis n brihas by harini made this song a hit though the movie was a flop.This is also of 'Senjurutti' raagam
5.Alaipayudhe (Alaipayudhe) - A keerthana by Uthukaadu venkata subbiar made to a cine song in the 'kaanada' raagam also sung by harini.
6.Minsaara kanna(Padayappa) - Competition song b/w rajini n ramya krishnan sung by Srinivas and Nityashree.
7.Sowkiyamaa(Sangamam) - Songs in this raaga(Maandu) are quiet rare. i can think of only 'Oru naal podhuma' by Dr.BMK sir.. if anyone can think of more cine songs in this raaga plz post.

Singing..

I think of those childhood days when i used to sit in front of my first music teacher(Mrs.Mohana,my relative) and repeat whatever she sang.. those times i never concentrated on raga,shruthi,..nothing. just listened to her singing and repeated it back..i used to even doze off when singing.. also hit my face against hers..:) but the beauty is when i was nt aware of these technical things, i made less mistakes,..anyway now i realize how much it takes to sing a krithi.. not only krithi,also varnams,thillana,..carnatic music or any song..
I believe the foremost thing that decides the splendor of a song is shruthi..if one is able to uphold the same shruthi throughout the song whichever raga he sings, he is identified as a good singer.. Then another essential thing is Thaalam.. Songs with adi taalam n roopaka thaalam are much easier to sing than in taalas like misra chaapu.. there are some krithis where the lyrics just fit into the thaalam.. one tat comes to my mind is bhogindra shaayinam(kuntalavaraali).. a lovely fast krithi.. but some really prove a challenge...
Next i feel control over the breath is very essential.. In many cine songs, we hear the hmm.. breathing sound of singers , most prominent s harini's..does the MD's purposely do it to give it a feeling or something?? If the singer breathes loudly in improper places,swallowing the lyrics, the charm of the song s definitely lost..
Bold singing is something which i had to correct myself on and feel am improving....Perfect example is SPB sir.. all his songs can be identified easily as in his voice s unique n bold..be it ilaya nila or megam kottatum or vannam konda... evry one shud hv their own style of singing.. n shud nt imitate any particular singer . I loved the way Krishnamurthy(Airtel super singer) sang.. he sang so many challenging numbers excellently in his amazing voice..
Pronounciation also plays a grt role.. I hate some northy singers like sadhana sargam , shreya goshal who spoil the beautiful tamil language like anything evnthough they have lovely voice.. why r nt the music directors correcting them.. thr r so many talented properly pronouncing singers in our state only.. i agree tat they r really great singers..but y spoil our language.. i feel we should not give up our language for big shots singing thm..

I was not blogging for 8 months since i took a break to welcome my son to this world.. he is five months old now.. sweet naughty lil one.. he enjoys his mom singing to him.. i sing a variety of songs(classical,movie numbers,nursery rhymes,bhajans,hindi songs) with lot of expressions to attract his attention.. later i stop those expressions and sing only the song and he is hooked to the song..
Here are few of his favorites..

Ilayaraja - 'Isaigyani' a perfect title for him, his knowledge about music is unbeatable. No music director has exploited the ragas in carnatic music as he has done...So many varieties,colours...hundreds of songs come to my mind when i think of his talent in these lines...let me mention some of my favourites..
Raagam - Shanmugapriya
I love 'Kannukul noou nilava' song from vedam pudhidhu..I saw this movie when i was very young..tat time when i used to listen to this song.. i waited for tat 'Guru brahma guru vishnu' part n sang along.. this song starts with high note swaras of shanmuga priya,..I was thinking this song is IR's and started talking abt this..but my blogger friends corrected me. Its by a MD called Devendran.
Other songs i like in this raga -- Sollayo vaay thirandhu(Mogamul) - an emotional melody, Kaadhal kasakudayya(aan paavam) - a fast number. Though these r of the same ragam they r of different moods..
Some more worth mentioning:
Endhan nenjil neengadha(Nalinakaanthi) -- soothening melody perfectly suited for kamal.
Thoongadha vizhigal rendu - Amrithavarshini
Kalyana then nila - Kaanada

This song is from the movie kalki.. balachander's movie.. an evergreen song... though this movie was nt a big hit.. characters in the movie n songs were talked off.. Especially this song.. sung by chinna kuyil chitra and anuradha sriram.. chitra brings an awesome feeling to the song.....deva has scored the music... In the movie, actress geetha performed so aptly for the song.. Lyrics s the highlight of the song..i wud say... one can close their eyes n listen to it how manyever no of times...

I should say I missed to listen to tis song when it got released.. I dint even know it was from the maniratnam movie 'Guru'.. Heard tis first in tamil version when Srinivas who had sung it originally in Guru (Tamil) rendered it in a tv show.. it was 'hey maanburu mangaiye'.. it was so lovely.. later i realized its rahman's composition and heard the hindi version, ay hairathe aashiqui.. amazing lyrics.. sung by the grt Hariharan and alka yagnik.. Excellent duet... so soothening and wonderful ... simply touched..
